"Mindfulness and the Art of Choice": Transform Your Life by Karen H. Sherman, PhD is a short and easy-to-read book that aims to help you achieve to live a good life by controlling your emotions and changing your reactions to the problems. At the beginning of the book, I read the life story of the author and I was really shocked. If you read the book, you will understand what I mean. After struggling many psychological and family issues, seeing a person reach a great level in her life is like a miracle. But is it really a miracle? Actually that's what she wants to tell us. It's in our hands, in our brain, in our heart, in our soul, in our reactions. Whatever you experience, if you can control your reactions and develop empathy, you can get over any problem, so can be happy! It's a matter of choice!
Rather than looking for a consequence, The Art of Choice will teach you how to adopt an imaginative way to move through life by being in a process that is always "at choice". (p: viii)
The book consists of 2 parts & 11 chapters and also various exercises. What we live now comes from our childhood, and some of the exercises help us face our childhood's bad memories and accept them with our current adult side. And some of them are for eliminating physical tension in our body like the breathing exercises. I really love breathing exercise, because it helps me feel like a feather. Another exercise I loved is to write random thoughts on a paper without thinking over it. It's like a brain storming. Many interesting things can reveal in this exercise :)
PS: Breathing is a great solution! As I'm a singer, I always did breathing exercises in my vocal lessons and I still do in my daily life. It's like a golden key! You can't sing without breathing, you can't live without breathing. Try it in a regular session for about 5 minutes with your midriff (not more, because excessive oxygen can make you pass out) and you will feel really relieved and it's healthy.
My Favorite Quotes:
- One of the definitions of insanity is "doing the same thing over and over, but expecting the outcome to be different".
- Acknowledge that what you are feeling is from the past.
- The more you flow with your emotions and connect to their meaning, the quicker you will transition through them, and the more control you will feel.
From the Author:
I’m a Psychologist in private practice for 25 years assisting people attain their greatest potential in relationship to themselves and others.

I learned that the cornerstone of Dr. Sherman’s personal philosophy analyzes the tool of choice under many varied situations.
ReplyDeletemverno@roadrunner.com
The dictionary defines art as “the conscious use of a skill and creative imagination.” Choice is defined as “The act of deciding on, or picking out.” The Art of Choice is the process of learning to consciously explore possible options in order to make conscious decisions, rather than reacting mindlessly to circumstance.

ReplyDeleteI learned:
ReplyDeletePart of the Art of Choice is accepting the realities that exist in the moment. Even if we do nothing, it’s important to realize that choosing to do nothing is in itself a choice.

ReplyDeleteI learned from the review: When we live mindlessly it means we simply function. We exist rather than live - like we’re on “autopilot” and therefore not really conscious of what we are doing. We are not taking responsibility for our actions, reactions, or behaviors.
ReplyDeleteI need this book to get me of autopilot.
